Tongue ties and lip ties are often discussed by appearance. A thoughtful evaluation also considers movement, symptoms, and function.
What Is a Tongue Tie?
Underneath the tongue is a small band of tissue called the lingual frenulum. In some children, this tissue may restrict the tongue's normal range of motion or function. The important word is function. The appearance of the frenulum alone doesn't tell the entire story.
An evaluation can help determine whether a restriction exists and whether it relates to the symptoms your child is experiencing.
What Is a Lip Tie?
A frenulum also connects the upper lip to the gums. Parents sometimes become concerned when this tissue appears prominent or when their child experiences feeding or oral development difficulties.
Just like tongue ties, appearance alone does not necessarily determine whether intervention is appropriate. Your child's symptoms and function should be considered.
The important word is function.
The appearance of a frenulum alone does not tell the entire story. An evaluation helps connect anatomy with your child's real-world symptoms and movement.

Speech is complex. When parents have speech concerns, evaluating oral function can be one piece of understanding the bigger picture. Some children may also benefit from evaluation by a speech-language professional.
Tongue Ties & Feeding
Feeding involves coordination between multiple muscles and structures. If you're struggling with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, chewing, swallowing, or transitioning foods, it's important to look at the whole child rather than assuming a tongue tie is the only possible explanation.
